What counts as a long-term illness or disability?

Any illness or disability can qualify, provided it is a chronic or long-term condition and is not expected to improve in the near future.

You do not need to be registered as disabled or provide medical proof – HMRC only requires a declaration.

What does “personal or domestic use” mean?

The product must be used by an individual in their own home, or purchased on behalf of someone for their everyday personal use.

VAT relief does not apply if the goods are bought for commercial use, rented out, or purchased by a care home for general use within their facility.

Care homes must pay VAT unless they are a registered charity. A care home resident can still receive VAT relief only if the product is purchased by them personally or by a family member on their behalf.
